Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has recently come out and said he plans to give Ruben Amorim three years at the club to prove his is a top manager.
That is despite leading the Red Devils to a miserable 15th place Premier League finish last season, and having a disappointing start to the current campaign.
There are plenty of top managers out there who United could go for should they decide to make a change sooner, and we’ve picked out some of the best available options at present.
Oliver Glasner
Probably the most obvious candidate to be the next Man Utd boss. The Austrian has done a phenomenal job at Crystal Palace, leading them to last year’s FA Cup and guiding his side to an 18-match unbeaten run which was recently halted by Everton.
Palace have put themselves into early contention for the European spots despite losing star man Ebere Eze this past summer. Indeed, bookmakers on Non-GamStop-Betting.com have the Eagles down as having a strong chance of at least making the top six.
They will be hoping to keep hold of Glasner for longer, whose contract runs out at the end of the campaign, but he would surely be high on United’s list should the job become available.
Andoni Iraola
Similarly to Glasner, Iraola has done a great job with a Premier League club in Bournemouth. After taking over in difficult circumstances, he has continued to improve the team and they too have been among the best teams in the top flight this season despite losing several key players over the summer.
Iraola’s deal is also up next summer and the job he has done on the south coast will not have gone unnoticed at Old Trafford.
Gareth Southgate
The former England manager would probably not be a popular choice at Old Trafford but he did a fine job with the national team, guiding them to two European Championship finals though he was often criticised for his apparent negative tactics.
Julian Nagelsmann
Nagelsmann is currently in charge of the German national team where he has not fared too well, having previously established himself as one of the best coaches in world football. He has previous big club experience too at Bayern Munich but might be a risky appointment.
Michael Carrick
The former Manchester United midfielder has previously taken temporary charge of the club and is out of work after being sacked by Championship club Middlesbrough where he had a mixed spell.
It would be a big step up for the Englishman but he was hugely successful as a player at United and would be warmly received by the supporters.
