Who is Alejandro 'Coco' Cárdenas, América striker? | OneFootball

Following Guillermo Almada’s arrival at Club América, several academy players have been promoted to the first team. According to Americayya.net, one of them is 20-year-old striker Alejandro 'Coco' Cárdenas, who stands 1.90 metres tall.

Almada has long backed youth, and he has already acted on that belief in his opening matches with América.

Cárdenas came through América’s system and was elevated from the U-21. He made his top-flight debut under Almada against Atlante, then scored his first goal in Mexico’s first division against Santos.

The youngster appears to be moving ahead of Patricio Salas, who started under André Jardine but has had only limited minutes with Almada.

It is clear Cárdenas will be the second striker behind Henry Martín. That could change though, as the club are seeking another forward and it remains unclear whether the ‘Pantera’ Zúñiga will leave.

Almada said selection is about performance rather than age, and that youngsters who outshine senior players will get minutes. He added they have worked extremely hard and earned their chance, and that Cárdenas is on the rise and the club will enjoy a fine footballer.
