Egypt and Nigeria deadlocked after 90 minutes

Egypt and Nigeria finished Saturday January 17’s AFCON 2025 third-place match 0 - 0 in Casablanca sending the bronze decider to penalties.
Nigeria tried to raise the tempo after the restart introducing Ademola Lookman early in second half and he even found the net within minutes, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside.
From there, the Super Eagles carried the sharper threat in short bursts with Lookman again at the heart of their best moments. He controlled inside the box and looked set to pull the trigger before Egypt’s back line got bodies in the way and smothered the chance.
With Mohamed Salah dropping into pockets and Egypt prioritising control over chaos, Hossam Hassan rolled the dice on 61 minutes.
Omar Marmoush & Mahmoud Saber replaced Mahmoud Trezeguet and Ahmed “Zizo” Sayed. Nigeria responded with Alex Iwobi for Bright Samuel, then Egypt introduced Ibrahim Adel for Mostafa Mohamed as the clock ticked down.
As fatigue crept in, spaces appeared and both teams committed more men forward but neither could land the decisive punch. With the score still level at full-time, the bronze medal will be decided by the lottery of penalties.
