Manchester United’s U21s started their Premier League International Cup campaign with a brilliant come-from-behind 2-1 win against Athletic Club B on Wednesday.

The match at Old Trafford was decided by two second-half goals from James Scanlon and Gabriele Biancheri.

Despite the triumph, tongues were set wagging when Chido Obi remained an unused substitute despite his electrifying form this season.

He already has three goals from three starts, yet Travis Binnion opted to keep him on the bench with Shea Lacey and Amir Ibragimov providing that much needed thrust off the bench.

Chido Obi absence

The Sun claimed that the Danish youth international was disappointed with his coach’s decision and stormed off the pitch.

But in reality, as revealed by The Manchester Evening News, he was simply rested as the U21s have a packed calendar coming up.

“Chido Obi was rested for Manchester United Under-21s’ game against Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday.

“Travis Binnion named Obi on the bench for the opening Premier League International Cup game. The U21s have a busy schedule this month and the decision was made to give Obi a rest.

Reason for snub revealed

The ex-Arsenal youth star had played the full 90 minutes in the U21s’ PL2 win against Liverpool last Sunday and what will have pleased Binnion the most was the team managed to find a winner without their star striker.

He is set to feature again on Saturday against Crystal Palace U21s on Saturday.

Most peoples forget Chido Obi is only 17, and even though he made eight appearances for the first team last season, he remains a raw talent.

The U21 boss explained as much recently, but did claim that the Denmark U20 international has bags of potential and that we are only seeing a fraction of his talents.
