Vasco fans hoping to see Douglas Luiz back in the Cruz de Malta will have to wait, his next step keeps him in Europe.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Juventus and Aston Villa have a verbal agreement on a paid loan with an option to buy, returning the midfielder to Villa after his Nottingham Forest spell.
Juventus hold his contract and will recall him before he moves on to Villa. He did not enjoy the expected run at Forest, and Villa offers an environment where he is settled and highly regarded.
The move underlines a strong European market for him, with Premier League interest driving fees and salaries to elite levels. For Villa it means restoring a midfield pillar, for Douglas Luiz a chance to regain prominence.
A comeback to Brazil is seen as financially unworkable. Deals are priced in pounds and euros and, with a Juventus contract in place, a Vasco return would require him to be a free agent or in sharp decline, which he is not.
While leading English clubs pay loan fees and full wages in strong currency, Brazilian sides, even well-structured SAFs, cannot compete. Vasco will keep the door open for a future homecoming once circumstances change.
In the meantime the club focus on attainable targets for Fernando Diniz's squad. The priority is left-back, with Cuiabano and Juninho Capixaba among the options, and the retention of key players.
