Athletic enter the run-in knowing European qualification is vital to the club’s finances, with squad costs at record highs.
El Correo reports that since Jon Uriarte arrived, squad spending has risen from 88.7 million in 2022-23 to a budgeted 94 this season, up 12.3%. Against last term’s 100.9 final outlay, the increase is 19.6%.
Player incentives will be scarce. The treasurer, Guillermo Ruiz-Longarte, told members their Champions forecast assumed no progress beyond the groups, with one win and two draws, so no bonuses.
The squad bill passed 100 million for the first time, a level that needs elite income to be sustainable. European football underpins that and strengthens Athletic’s pull in the market.
Without Europe, Uriarte first used 14 million from provisions, then posted a 2.6 million profit thanks to the Copa. This campaign a 10 million surplus was budgeted, likely higher after five Champions points.
The club has no financial debt, with 112 million equity and 24 in provisions.
Champions income this season is around 48 million, including 28 for participation and results. This will account for 26% of income, while last season’s Europa League delivered 17% and roughly 31.7 million. Across the last 10 European campaigns Athletic have earned almost 140 million.
The board have backed a competitive squad, fighting to keep Nico and investing 43 million in signings, and the plan is not to sell key players. The Conference League is within reach but pays far less, 3.75 million fixed against 19 in the Champions League.
