Why Iraola would be a bad choice for Chelsea according to Paul Merson

Paul Merson has pointed out why Andoni Iraola – or any manager, in fact – might struggle if they’re appointed at Chelsea.

Whatever the result of tonight’s Chelsea – Brighton game, Blues manager Liam Rosenior is under serious pressure.

Many Chelsea fans were very unsure about his appointment to begin with, and that’s not changed now that he’s on a record-breakingly bad run.

Paul Merson speculated about the coach’s future in his column for Sky Sports today.

“I don’t know what Chelsea are going to do with Liam Rosenior. You feel sorry for him in a way because it’s been hard for him. He’s come from Strasbourg into a really big job. And he was always one defeat away from pressure.

“But he has overseen just two wins in eight games – with the only two wins being Wrexham and Port Vale. And it’s five wins in 15 games. It hasn’t been great.”

Merson says Iraola would face same issues as Rosenior

Merson suggests the Blues could appoint Andoni Iraola, who is set to leave Bournemouth at the end of the season. But as the pundit points out, a few bad results would leave the Basque in the same tricky situation that Rosenior is in. That’s just the reality at Chelsea.

“[Iraola] would come from Bournemouth. If they had drawn or lost against Newcastle at the weekend, there would have been no hassle, no worries.

“But if he comes to Chelsea, you lose a couple of games and you’re under severe, severe pressure.”
