Raul Jimenez started Mexico’s World Cup opener against South Africa wearing his customary protective headband, a legacy of the skull fracture he suffered in 2020.

According to L'Équipe, the 35-year-old forward sustained the injury in a Premier League match and spent nine months out. In 2021 he said doctors explained the risks, described his survival as a miracle, and confirmed the impact had caused bleeding on the brain.

Wolverhampton supported him and he swiftly returned to competition, then put together several Premier League seasons. He will return to Wolves next year, relegated to the Championship, after three seasons at Fulham.

Thursday’s game is at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, where he is winning his 127th cap for Mexico.

Jimenez is the third highest scorer in Mexico’s history with 45 goals, and this appearance places him ninth for Mexico caps.
