Why This Season’s Serie A Title Failure Is Worse Than 2021-22 For Inter Milan

This seasons’ failure to win the Serie A title feels even more bitter for Inter Milan than in the 2021-22 season.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, argue that the Nerazzurri have outdone themselves in terms of throwing away the title.

Inter Milan could still win the Serie A title, technically. If Cagliari are to do them a massive favour, they may well overtake Napoli at the top of the table on the final day.

However, the feeling is that this would be very, very unlikely.

Inter know that they had a massive opportunity yesterday. Parma held the Partenopei to a gritty 0-0 draw at the same time as their match against Lazio.

And Inter twice had the lead against Lazio. But they surrendered it very cheaply on both occasions.

Why This Serie A Title Failure Stings More For Inter Milan Than 2021-22

This won’t exactly be an unfamiliar feeling for Inter Milan.

The Nerazzurri had also looked to be in firm control at one point during the 2021-22 season.

However, a run of poor results in the spring allowed Inter’s city rivals AC Milan to overtake them.

Then, an infamous loss away to Bologna in April sealed Inter’s fate.

In the view of the Gazzetta, however, this season’s trajectory is far worse for the Nerazzurri.

In 2022, the Nerazzurri had to watch on as Milan put together a run of victories to close out the campaign decisively.

By the time Inter lost in Bologna, there was already no margin for error for them.

On the other hand, this season Inter have had a much less formidable title rival in Napoli.

The Partenopei’s draw in Parma yesterday should have been a great opportunity for Inter. But it was not the first.

In truth, Napoli have been unconvincing front-runners, with their performances and results hardly those of a dominant title-winning team.

However, every time Napoli have given Inter an opportunity, the Nerazzurri have failed to take advantage.
