Sheffield United secured back-to-back victories with a composed 2-0 win over Watford at Vicarage Road on Saturday afternoon.
The Blades started brightly, with Jairo Riedewald showing sharp awareness to win possession on the halfway line before quickly releasing Callum O’Hare. Driving forward with purpose, O’Hare slipped a neat pass into Andre Brooks, whose low effort was comfortably gathered by Watford goalkeeper Egil Selvik.
Brooks continued to influence proceedings and, on 17 minutes, produced a clever ball over the top to release Patrick Bamford. The striker chased it down and managed a tight-angle effort that forced a smart low save from Selvik to keep the game level.
Watford’s best spell came midway through the first half. Nestory Irankunda struck powerfully towards goal, only for Japhet Tanganga to produce a superb, brave block. The hosts struggled to create clear openings, however, with Edo Kayembe firing over from close range under pressure.
After the break, United asserted control and their persistence paid off five minutes into the second half. Bamford was central to the breakthrough, holding the ball up expertly before driving forward and linking with Gustavo Hamer. Hamer’s low shot was heading goalward before Bamford, continuing his run, applied the decisive touch to steer it into the corner.
With momentum firmly with the visitors, the second goal arrived just nine minutes later. Femi Seriki surged forward and drilled a dangerous low cross into the near-post area, where Bamford again showed his striker’s instinct, flicking the ball into the far corner to complete his brace.
From there, Sheffield United remained defensively resolute, seeing out the victory and securing a long-awaited clean sheet.
After the match, speaking to SUTV, manager Chris Wilder praised both the performance and the mentality of his side.
“We needed that type of performance,” Wilder said. “They’ve got some really technical players who can hurt you, so we had to defend properly. Getting the first goal, and then quickly the second, was huge for us psychologically.”
He also highlighted the game management shown late on, adding: “We made intelligent, experienced decisions. I went a little bit early to a back five because I wanted that clean sheet. The lads put their bodies on the line and I never really felt threatened in the last 15 or 20 minutes.”
Wilder emphasised the importance of momentum heading into the final stretch of the season, with United now sitting 12th and pushing to finish strongly.
“Two wins on the spin, two home games to go; we’ve got to get something out of this season, and we’re determined to do that,” he said.
The manager also pointed to areas for improvement, particularly in controlling possession: “We’ve looked at turnovers, and statistically we’d be much higher in the table if we were calmer on the ball. That’s something we need to keep working on.”
Individual performances did not go unnoticed either, with Wilder singling out Riedewald and Joe Rothwell for their contributions in midfield, while reserving special praise for match-winner Bamford.
“The story should be about Pat,” Wilder added. “His hold-up play, his experience, and his performance were outstanding. He keeps getting into the right positions and isn’t afraid to miss. That’s what top strikers do.”
Sheffield United are next in action on Wednesday evening when they welcome Blackburn Rovers to Bramall Lane.
