William Saliba has commented on his contract situation at Arsenal after being linked with a move to Real Madrid.
The France international has been the backbone of the Gunners’ stingy defence in recent years, helping them keep the best defensive record in the Premier League last season, something they are on track to repeat this year.
The 23-year-old’s performances have reportedly attracted the attention of Real, who are in the market for a new centre-back.
Saliba is about to enter the final two years of his current deal after signing a contract extension in 2023. But he brushed off question about renewing term on Tuesday and even said he wants to continue playing at Arsenal.
“I am here and really happy here,” he said. “I have another two years. I want to continue here.”
The defender has been described as a ‘colossus’ on social media after winning all of his aerial duels in the last two games, highlighting one of the many reasons why top clubs would be interested in signing him.
“I like being colossus and it is a good stat,” he said. It means I am playing well. But it is not enough and I can do better, I think.”
Saliba was speaking ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League clash with PSV Eindhoven at home, the first leg of which Arsenal won 7-1. The competition is the club’s only realistic chance of securing a major trophy this season.
“Everyone wants to win the Champions League because it is a competition you watch when you are young. We will give everything and anything can happen.”
