Tottenham Hotspur’s Wilson Odobert has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury, adding to the club’s mounting problems during a difficult Premier League campaign.
The 21-year-old winger was forced off in the 35th minute of the 2-1 home defeat to Newcastle United after appearing to damage his left knee.
He was replaced by Mathys Tel and left the pitch visibly distressed, consoled by team-mates as he headed down the tunnel.
Medical assessments have since revealed a torn ACL, an injury that typically requires surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation period.
Odobert is therefore unlikely to return before the start of the 2026-27 season.
The France Under-21 international joined Tottenham Hotspur from Burnley in 2024 and has made 33 appearances in all competitions this term.
He has scored two goals overall but is yet to find the net in 24 Premier League outings this season.
His absence further weakens a squad already stretched by multiple long-term injuries.
Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison are both sidelined with knee problems, while Mohammed Kudus, Lucas Bergvall, Richarlison, Rodrigo Bentancur, Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie have also been unavailable in recent weeks.
Odobert’s injury leaves Tottenham particularly short of options on the right flank.
Kulusevski is not close to a return and Kudus is expected to remain out until at least April, limiting natural width in that area.
Mathys Tel, who replaced Odobert against Newcastle United, is more comfortable operating from the left.
In Tuesday’s defeat, central midfielder Conor Gallagher was shifted out wide after Odobert’s withdrawal, highlighting the lack of specialist alternatives.
The club’s decision to allow Brennan Johnson to leave during the winter transfer window has increased scrutiny given the current shortage in attacking positions.
The setback comes at a turbulent time for Tottenham.
The loss to Newcastle United proved to be Thomas Frank’s final match in charge, with the club parting company with the head coach earlier today.
Tottenham are 16th in the Premier League table and have failed to win any of their last eight league matches.
They have managed just two victories in their previous 17 top-flight fixtures and sit five points above the relegation zone.
For the second consecutive season, an injury crisis has disrupted Tottenham’s momentum and planning.
Whoever succeeds Frank will need to navigate a depleted squad and consider tactical adjustments to compensate for the lack of wide options.
Odobert’s long-term absence represents another significant blow as Tottenham attempt to stabilise their season and pull clear of trouble.
