As reported by Coluna Do Fla, a contentious penalty appeal went unawarded in Flamengo’s match against São Paulo, and Jorginho was sent off after the final whistle for alleged abuse.
At 51 minutes of the second half, Arrascaeta tried to pounce on a Gonzalo Plata rebound. Alan Franco made contact with Arrascaeta’s left leg and the Uruguayan went down. Despite being close, referee Wilton Pereira Sampaio did not award a penalty and VAR did not recommend a review.
In his match report, Wilton Pereira Sampaio wrote that he showed a straight red to Flamengo’s number 21, Jorge Luiz Frello Filho, after full time for approaching him in an agitated and disrespectful manner and calling him a disgrace while saying he was messing with them.
However, lip-reading specialist Gustavo Machucado said Jorginho did not insult the referee. After the game was ended without a VAR check, the midfielder was seen saying the situation was a disgrace, telling the referee to show the red and noting that he had ended the match.
Flamengo now face Corinthians this Sunday in the Supercopa do Brasil final at Estádio Mané Garrincha in Brasília, with kick-off at 16:00 Brasília time.
