The January transfer window is over, and there was a lot of business conducted in the Premier League. Around £404 million was spent by clubs in England’s top division.

So which clubs were the winners and losers of the window?

Winners

Manchester City were undoubtedly the winners of the January transfer window. They signed Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi, two of the best players in the league playing for so called ‘smaller’ clubs. To sign them in the summer would have been a coup, but in January is extremely impressive.

Semeneyo was signed from Bournemouth for £65 million and has started very well, scoring four goals in five games so far. Guehi was signed from Crystal Palace in a deal worth £20 million and has started two games.

Aston Villa have had a good window. They signed former striker Tammy Abraham on a permanent deal from Besiktas worth £18.25 million. The Englishman thought he had scored on his debut against Brentford but the goal was unfortunately ruled out.

Unai Emery also opted to bring in Douglas Luiz on loan from Juventus. Luiz was excellent for Villa during a five year spell between 2019-2024 in which he made over 200 appearances for the club, and Emery will be hoping the Brazilian can rediscover that form.

Losers

Crystal Palace have had a truly terrible January. They didn’t win a game during the entire month, captain Marc Guehi left the club, Jean-Philippe Mateta was very close to leaving to AC Milan and is now injured, and the news came that manager Oliver Glasner will be leaving at the end of the season.

It has been blow after blow for Palace fans. They have signed Brennan Johnson, Evann Guessand and striker Jorgen Strand Larsen in a club record deal worth £48 million, but the mood around the club is negative to say the least.

Burnley have not had a good window. James Ward-Prowse was the only incoming, and they needed more. Burnley are only above Wolves in the Premier League, and Wolves brought in Angel Gomes and Adam Armstrong.

Whether those two players are enough to save them from relegation is still in question, but at least they have tried. West Ham also signed several players, so the relegation fight should remain tense til the end.
