Winning ugly, but Danny Rohl is getting the right Rangers results

Whether Danny Rohl’s critics, including Ibrox Noise, like it or not, by hook or by crook, the man has managed 7 wins of 9 in the league. That is title winning form, if maintained, of course. We long remember Barry Ferguson during his PLG days, when Rangers captain announced that the club wouldn’t have turned a corner unless it went 10 matches unbeaten, with the implication being at least 7 or 8 wins in those 10. Well, Rohl hadn’t lost a league match yet. And while, admittedly, his opponents have been mostly bread and butter sides, and he hasn’t played particularly well against them, you measure your team on the results, on the points.

Performances v Points

Yes, in the big matches, Rohl has fallen painfully short, scraping a draw against Dundee United, of course, and only just beating Hibs twice by a single goal. But nevertheless, by one goal or by 50, and by playing brilliantly or playing poorly, the win is what counts.

Bigger Tests Ahead

The really interesting aspect will be seeing how Rohl’s Rangers rolls on and does against Hearts (this weekend), Celtic, Motherwell and, of course, Aberdeen. So, once Rohl has faced these 4 or 5 top 6 sides, and has managed to get results in those ones, we can really look at whether there is a slim chance that Rangers could actually contend for the title. It seems like an absurd notion, given how clearly bad we actually are. But Celtic are even worse at the moment. Their manager is a true clown, for which we are grateful.

Still Doubts Despite Points

But there is, of course, Hearts, who are flying high. Are Rangers strong enough to beat Hearts? That is a big call. Hearts are, possibly, rhetorical favourite to win the title this season. Not actually, Celtic are still odds-on with the bookies. But Rangers and Celtic are floundering all over themselves, in general. But that said, as we mentioned, Rohl’s record in the league is good. His play is not. The decisions he’s made aren’t terribly great.

When we see Youssef Chermiti starting, it really does cause some consternation. When we see him come on, it’s much the same. But ultimately, despite some of the questionable team selections and shape of the side, the wins are mostly coming in. 7 of 9. 20 points of 24. It’s a pretty good innings.

Even those, as we say, like ourselves at this site, who have major misgivings that Rohl is the right man, can’t deny that at least there has been an uptick domestically in the league. If that continues on, and he gets the same kind of results against the better teams, over which we have a lot of doubt he can, then yes, that is title winning form, if it can go on. But time will tell. And Danny Rohl’s critics might silence.
