VfL Wolfsburg head coach Paul Simonis will make a late call on whether new signing Christian Eriksen will be in his squad to face 1. FC Köln in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

The 33-year-old midfielder, who arrived on a free transfer on Wednesday, impressed in his first training session with Die Wölfe, but isn’t yet being considered for a starting role.

Eriksen hasn't played a competitive game since leaving Manchester United at the end of last season, but has been training with Swedish side Malmö to keep fit.

“I don’t know exactly what his fitness level is. But he trained with Malmö last week and kept himself fit before that. He trained with us for the first time today and left a good impression. After the final session we’ll decide whether he will be in the squad. But he won’t start,” Simonis told reporters on Thursday.

The Wolfsburg coach emphasised that Eriksen can play a decisive role once he’s fully settled in.

“I’m happy that he chose us. He’s very secure on the ball and can do decisive things for us on the pitch. He’s versatile, able to play both deeper and more advanced in midfield. In one or two weeks we’ll know what his best position for us will be.”
