With head coach Ralph Hasenhüttl’s future on the VfL Wolfsburg bench looking increasingly shaky, The Bundesliga’s green company team reportedly have their preferred replacement lined up. Kicker claims that FC Copenhagen head coach Jacob Neestrup is set to take over once the season concludes. Neestrup shall be reunited with his former sporting director and Danish compatriot Peter Christiansen.

Hasenhüttl himself recently admitted that he didn’t expect to coach the club beyond the season. Speaking to Sky Germany after last Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Mainz – his team’s sixth game in a row without a win – the 57-year-old revealed that he and die Autostädter were leaning towards parting ways. In 12th place on 39 points with four matchday remaining, Wolfsburg’s European ambitions for next year are finished.

“If at the end of the season there are seven or eight teams ahead of us that shouldn’t really be ahead of us, then it wasn’t enough,” Hasenhüttl lamented, “Then it’s time for someone else to give it a go. We’ll sit down at the end of the season and consider what’s best for the club.“

Kicker treats Hasenhüttl’s imminent dismissal as a fact. Eight points removed from the second Europa League place, it seems as if little can save the Austrian head coach now. Wolfsburg do remain only six points below the UEFA Europa Conference League playoff place, but that shouldn’t preclude Christiansen from bringing in his preferred candidate.
