It could be argued that no player in the Frauen-Bundesliga has had a better start to their breakout season than VfL Wolfsburg star Ella Peddemors.

The 23-year-old is having a big year by anyone’s standards. The midfielder has broken into the Netherlands national team, consistently featured in the UEFA Champions League, and has been scoring regularly in the Bundesliga.

Peddemors joined VfL Wolfsburg two seasons ago from FC Twente but was immediately loaned back out to the Vrouwen Eredivisie outfit. She finally linked up with her new side ahead of the 2025/26 season.

The tactically gifted midfielder has since been an integral part of the set-up at Wolfsburg. Having scored four league goals and impressed in the UWCL, it’s clear to all why she was targeted by the German giants.

A serial winner in the Netherlands

VfL Wolfsburg will face Women’s Super League powerhouses Chelsea in the Champions League this evening. Ahead of the clash, Peddemors spoke to the media about her vision at her new club and their European endeavours.

“I won everything you can with in the Dutch league. I think they [Wolfsburg] see that experience in me and that’s why they wanted to bring me in,” she said of her transfer.

The transition for Peddemors has seemed a somewhat streamlined task. The midfielder wasted no time integrating into the starting line-up for Wolfsburg in both the Bundesliga and in the UWCL.

“When you play matches at the highest level there is, to challenge yourself, it’s amazing,” Peddemors explained. “I think for the development of our squad and myself, it’s an amazing opportunity to develop and to perform.”

Wolfsburg’s success in the UWCL

There was a time when no team in Europe was feared as much as VfL Wolfsburg. As back-to-back UWCL winners in 2013 and 2014, they set the standard throughout Europe during those two seasons, and also completed the treble consecutively.

However, more recently, Wolfsburg haven’t quite emitted the same fear-mongering aura shown in previous years.

“I don’t think for us it’s a topic we speak a lot about or give a lot of focus to,” Peddemors admitted. “Of course we know, we’re a big club, we have a lot of history here, but we don’t speak particularly about that.”

Looking ahead with VfL Wolfsburg

VfL Wolfsburg sit seventh in the UWCL table, with three wins and two losses. Currently sandwiched between Arsenal and Bayern Munich, they’re in good company sitting above the reigning champions on goal difference.

Chelsea, led by three-time champion Sonia Bompastor, are Wolfsburg’s next hurdle. The Blues currently sit unbeaten in third, just two points behind Lyon and leaders Barcelona. The eight-time WSL winners will be looking to solidify their position with a win over Wolfsburg.

“I take a lot of confidence from the previous games I’ve played,” Peddemors continued. “It makes things easier when you’re personally playing like that, so it’s nice. It gives me a lot of confidence [in our chances to win].

“We are preparing the same we do for every game. We prepare for the top, top teams like we do every other game, we do nothing different in particular. Of course, when you look at the English Women’s Super League, that competition is a really high level. Chelsea being in the top part of that league, we know the qualities they have. They have a lot of power but also have a lot of power in this team. I think it’s going to be an interesting game.”

How to watch VfL Wolfsburg vs Chelsea

VfL Wolfsburg are already guaranteed a shot at progressing into the next round. However, a win over Chelsea could potentially see them into the top four, which will guarantee their place in the quarter-finals. As it stands, any of the top ten teams could finish in the top four if other results fall in their favour.

Clubs who finish between fifth and 12th at the end of the league phase will enter the play-offs to decide the remaining four competitors for the quarter-finals.

Wolfsburg will host English champions Chelsea on the December 17th. Tickets are still available for the match and can be bought here.
