Newcastle United will lock horns with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium this Wednesday night as they look to secure a win in their EFL Cup semi-final second leg clash. The Magpies suffered a poor 4-1 loss at the hands of Liverpool recently, so they would be eager to put in a much-improved showing in midweek.

Eddie Howe will set his players up in a 4-3-3 formation and is expected to make some changes to his starting XI for this cup game. Nick Woltemade and Bruno Guimaraes could both play from the start of this contest.

Defence

Nick Pope will operate in between the sticks for the Tyneside club after he conceded four goals in his last outing. Malick Thiaw will play alongside Dan Burn at the centre of the Newcastle backline as they hope to keep a good shape when defending inside his half.

Kieran Trippier will hope to put in a good performance as the right-back, while Dan Burn looks to catch the eye on the other side as the left-back. Both of them will get the freedom to go forward and express themselves inside the opponent’s half.

Alex Murphy will offer cover for the defensive positions on the bench.

Midfield

Joe Willock, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes will make up Howe’s midfield. All three of them need to retain possession well at the centre of the park if they want to engineer some decent chances in the final third.

Lewis Miley and Jacob Ramsey will have to be content with a place on the bench as they await their chance to make an impact in the second 45 minutes if required.

Attack

Anthony Gordon will hope to prove his value on the left flank, while Anthony Elanga looks to make a difference as the right-sided wide player.

Nick Woltemade will lead the charge for the Tyneside giants up top. He would be keen on finding the back of the net in midweek.

Yoane Wissa and Jacob Murphy will be named on the bench and might come on to influence the game in the final quarter of the game if Newcastle United
