Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes would be open to joining Manchester United during the winter transfer window, according to Portuguese outlet Record.

Man United have been monitoring the 24-year-old Brazilian. The Red Devils will have to pay Wolves around €50 million to sign Gomes, and they could be willing to do a deal for that fee.

They view the Brazil international midfielder as a cheaper alternative to Brighton & Hove Albion star Carlos Baleba and Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson.

Wolves are at the bottom of the Premier League table after picking up just two points from their opening 11 games of the season and are almost guaranteed to be relegated at the end of the campaign.

Gomes could be open to leaving for a club challenging for the top four in January, and selling him could be in the best interest of Wolves.

The Midlands club will not receive €50m from suitors for him if they are relegated, and they will be unable to retain him in the Championship.

The Red Devils will not be the only club looking to snap him up in January once it is clear that he is available.

The former Flamengo star has played almost 100 games for Wolves and has proven his quality in the English top-flight after succeeding at home.

Gomes won the Copa Libertadores, Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A, Copa do Brasil, Supercopa do Brasil and Campeonato Carioca with his boyhood club and will be hoping to replicate that success in Europe.

He was voted Wolves Supporters’ Player of the Season last term but is now ready to move on, and joining Man United would appeal to him.
