Wolves are pushing to sign Marseille midfielder Angel Gomes on loan, with Sunderland and Newcastle United among the English clubs linked.
TEAMtalk reports that a host of sides, including Sunderland, Newcastle, Everton, Brighton and Hove Albion, Fulham and West Ham, plus one unnamed Championship club, have been contacted about a temporary deal. Wolves are said to have accelerated talks to wrap up an agreement before any bidding scramble, with an initial loan expected to include an obligation to buy.
The Premier League strugglers are said to be in pole position, with discussions progressing and confidence growing that an agreement can be reached. Gomes has four senior England caps and began at Manchester United. He has since played for Lille, spent time on loan at Boavista, and is currently at Marseille.
Sunderland are not believed to be close to incoming business at present, but they did sanction a departure on Thursday. Defender Aji Alese has joined Championship side Portsmouth on loan after an extended spell on the sidelines, seeking valuable minutes following a year out of first-team action.
Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman praised Alese’s patience and work to be ready for this opportunity, and said the Championship is a familiar level that should suit him in the second half of the season. He also offered the club’s best wishes for the defender’s time on the south coast.
