Rob Edwards has defended continuing to start Mateus Mane despite suggestions the teenage forward has appeared tired.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, the 18-year-old burst onto the scene with goals against West Ham and Everton, but recent performances have been quieter than the high expectations around him.

That has prompted criticism of Edwards’ selection, yet Mane would make his 14th consecutive Premier League start if chosen for Monday night’s trip to Brentford.

The head coach insists the youngster still offers plenty and grows into matches, which underpins his decision to keep faith with him.

He suggested that when Mane has not scored or produced something eye-catching, some observers assume fatigue, but added that outside views differ from the staff’s own analysis of the games.
