Rob Edwards took charge of the Midlands outfit in November, but he was unable to turn things around after a disastrous start to the campaign.

The club have been in the top flight since 2018, but have already had their place in the bottom three confirmed with multiple games to spare.

A 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur last weekend saw Wolves fail to move ahead of Burnley, leaving them bottom of the table.

The Old Gold will be hoping to come straight back up next season, with planning already underway for potential transfer activity.

While a number of exits are on the cards, Edwards will also be keen to strengthen the squad with incomings as they target a top two finish in 2027.

Wolves face Spurs competition for Rangers' James Tavernier

It has been reported by Teamtalk that Wolves are monitoring the situation with James Tavernier following confirmation of his exit from Rangers at the end of the season.

The 34-year-old’s contract is set to expire, leading to speculation of a move back to English football.

However, Wolves reportedly face competition from Spurs in the race for his signature, with the London outfit identifying the defender as an option in case they are also relegated to the Championship.

It’s believed that the full-back is seen as an experienced option that could help Roberto de Zerbi’s side in the second tier.

Spurs currently occupy 18th in the Premier League table, and are two points adrift of safety with just four games to play.

The 1-0 victory away to Wolves on Saturday was their first league win in 2026, ending a 15-match winless run.

Spurs were briefly out of the relegation zone when Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall equalised in the 88th minute for Everton against 17th place West Ham on Saturday afternoon.

But Callum Wilson’s stoppage time winner moved the Hammers back out of the bottom three, with Nottingham Forest in 16th a further three points clear.

Tottenham have fixtures against Aston Villa, Leeds United, Chelsea and the Toffees remaining to overcome the gap to Nuno Espírito Santo’s side in a battle that could go to the final day of the season.

Meanwhile, Wolves had their relegation confirmed following a 3-0 loss to Leeds, with West Ham’s 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace last Monday sealing their position in the bottom three.

James Tavernier signing could make sense for Wolves

Tavernier is set to be available as a free agent this summer, and he could be quite a valuable addition to any Championship side.

The 34-year-old has a lot of experience under his belt, having competed at the highest level in Scotland for the last decade, including playing in the Champions League and the Europa League.

Tavernier has proven himself as a strong attacking presence on the right flank with a remarkable goalscoring record over the years, and could be suited to Edwards’ style of play given what he demands from wing-backs.

But the option to join a club the size of Spurs could also be quite tempting, so Wolves will be keeping a keen eye on de Zerbi’s side in the coming weeks in the hopes their survival will boost their chances of getting this deal over the line.
