Wolves pre-season tour diary: Training and interviews on day three

In the rising Portuguese heat, day three of Wolves’ pre-season brought a lighter schedule after Tuesday’s double session, but the tempo stayed high. I watched from the shade as small-sided games and attacking patterns kept competition sharp.

Late on Tuesday I squeezed in Spain’s win over France in the World Cup semi-finals, then headed back to prepare for the morning.

First thing at the training ground, under cloudless skies, the players eased in with stretching and light jogging, far less running than the day before. Tactical chat was reduced compared with Tuesday, yet the drills were technical and demanded focus.

Game scenarios followed, targeting attacking phases, width and overloads.

The club hierarchy watched on from the sidelines, including chairman Nathan Shi, who has flown out to Portugal to be around the squad, and Cesar Peixoto.

Afterwards I grabbed a quick chat with Toti Gomes, discussing training, his first impressions of Peixoto and the new arrivals Kieran Trippier, Raul Jimenez and Rafiki Said.

Leaving the private area, a few kids who had peered in asked if I was a player, which would spell trouble for Wolves if true. With the ego undeservedly topped up, I headed back to run through the day and prep for more interviews.

Then it was out to watch England face Argentina in the other semi-final, nerves jangling and a drink to steady them.
