Narrow loss to best team in land

Our valiant efforts went unrewarded. We lost 0-1 to FK Austria Vienna in front of a record crowd for an Austrian Women's Cup Final at the Wiener Sport-Club stadium, conceding a goal from a set piece. This leaves our FC Red Bull Salzburg Women as cup runners-up in their debut season.

Match summary

The Viennese side, still undefeated in domestic football, started this 50th Austrian Women's Cup Final with more energy. Uka had an early effort with a shot on the turn that was followed by a series of headers from the Violets. Other efforts from Wenninger and Weilharter, who was offside, were kept out by our defence.

Our defensive efforts after this initial onslaught ebbed as the first half progressed. Only Aldina Hamzic had to make a noteworthy intervention before half-time, intervening against Weilharter.

Our aim for the second half had to be to create more decisive chances on the transition. Initially, however, it was Austria who were again on the front foot. After Pfattner's shot hit the crossbar and Weilharter's following a corner had been dangerous, the moment came: Schiechtl gained aerial dominance after one of their countless corner kicks, heading the ball home for a 1-0 lead (52').

Undeterred, our girls now ventured forward more often. After a combination play, Greta Spinn, set up by Emelie Kobler, tested goalkeeper Pal – for our best chance at the Wiener Sport-Club ground. This was partly because, in the final stages, it was Austria who came closest to a second goal and, thanks to a lapse in concentration by Fischer and her subsequent denying of a goalscoring opportunity (90+2'), ended the match with a numerical advantage. This, however, became merely a footnote, as it was all over shortly afterwards. Our unprecedented cup run ended with a disappointing final defeat.
