There are few players at Liverpool whose presence feels as fundamental as Alisson Becker’s. A beacon of calm at the back, the Brazilian has grown into one of the club’s modern-day icons. Speaking ahead of Brazil’s World Cup qualifier against Peru, Alisson gave a rare insight into his contract situation, and it offers Liverpool fans reason to relax.
“I’ve never been able to plan long term,” he admitted. “Obviously now I have one year left on my contract and another year of club option, which they will probably exercise.”
The words were simple but clear. Liverpool are expected to trigger a 12-month extension that would keep Alisson at Anfield until 2027. With one year left on his current deal, the Reds appear set to take up the option to preserve the continuity and quality in goal that has defined much of the Jurgen Klopp era and now transitions under Arne Slot.

Amid a summer of change at Anfield, with coaching staff reshuffles and Caoimhin Kelleher’s move to Brentford, retaining Alisson provides much-needed consistency. He has been the bedrock of Liverpool’s recent success, a Champions League winner, Premier League champion, and provider of crucial moments at both ends of the pitch.
Liverpool’s decision to bring in Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia last summer, before loaning him back, was an eye on the future. But the Georgian will return as Alisson’s deputy, a role that comes with high expectations and the chance to learn from one of the game’s finest.
There’s no indication that Alisson’s standards are slipping. Quite the opposite. His performances last season remained elite, and his leadership in the dressing room is every bit as valuable as his match-saving interventions.
Liverpool’s approach to contracts in recent years has evolved. Where once short-termism and urgency drove decisions, there’s now a more calculated commitment to succession planning. Securing Alisson until 2027 would align with that model, rewarding a world-class performer while buying time for Mamardashvili to adapt and eventually challenge.

In the context of Premier League squads being overhauled, keeping a figure of Alisson’s stature offers the club a spine it can still build around. His partnership with Virgil van Dijk, his understanding with Trent Alexander-Arnold, and his vocal command from the back are irreplaceable intangibles.
Signed in 2018 from Roma, Alisson has proven to be one of Liverpool’s smartest investments. The £66.8m fee, then a world record for a goalkeeper, now feels like a bargain. His reflexes, distribution and character have transformed Liverpool’s defence and lifted silverware in every major competition.
Should the club formalise the contract extension, it would reaffirm their commitment to excellence between the posts. In an era of uncertainty and inflated transfer markets, holding onto proven class is a victory in itself.
