FIFA's heat policy will not move France v Paraguay from its 23:00 French time kick-off in Philadelphia, but thunderstorms could still interrupt the World Cup last-16 tie.
According to L'Équipe, France's 3-0 win over Iraq at Lincoln Financial Field featured a two hour 12 minute half-time suspension because of storms.
Intense heat has affected Independence Day celebrations marking 250 years since the US Declaration of Independence, yet FIFA has not built in rescheduling for temperature. Tournament planning factors in climate profiles, rest days and venue infrastructure, and outdoor kick-offs in peak heat were to be limited. Even so, around 38C in the shade is expected at kick-off.
Spectators may exceptionally bring one new plastic water bottle into the stadium for this match. For players, beyond five substitutions and a drinks break, provision includes water, electrolytes, ice, cold towels, fans, misters and shaded shelters.
Staff and substitutes will also have air-conditioned benches at all outdoor games. Units were seen along both touchlines in New York, blasting cold air into the stifling conditions.
Forecasts had looked favourable, but they have deteriorated in recent hours. Under the standard protocol, any lightning strike within roughly 10 km of the stadium triggers a 30 minute hold before kick-off or any restart.
