For the first time in World Cup history, FIFA has decided to introduce two mandatory hydration breaks per match. This measure, announced on Thursday, will apply to all games in the tournament set to take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

During each half, referees will pause play for two three-minute breaks, giving players time to rehydrate and protect themselves from the intense heat expected across North America. This initiative follows the experience of the Club World Cup in June 2025, where footballers faced extreme temperatures and challenging weather conditions, including scorching heat and occasional storms.

Additionally, broadcasters will make use of these breaks to air commercials, potentially opening up new business opportunities during live coverage.

This measure aims to safeguard player health and performance while adapting to the climate challenges of the North American continent, marking a significant evolution in managing high-intensity matches.
