England beat France 6-4 in Saturday’s third-place play-off, as several regular understudies fell short and Mbappé impressed.
According to Le Progres, the first half was insipid before a brighter response after the break, but the damage had been done. Their ratings reflected that divide.
Maignan, rated four, was beaten in the third and 18th minutes and stayed rooted. He then denied Rashford in the 33rd and 37th minutes but was left exposed for England’s third. He could not reach Saka’s strike in the second minute of first-half stoppage time.
Improved after the interval, he saved Toney’s header in the 59th minute and won his duel with Bellingham in the 80th. He could do nothing about Saka’s penalty in the 87th minute or the Real Madrid midfielder’s surge in the eighth minute of added time.
Gusto, given one, endured a shaky start, mistiming a step on Rice in the third minute and ultimately falling short of the required level. He twice intervened in front of Rashford in the seventh and ninth minutes, and there was a block on his line in the 37th, yet his recovery, positioning and duels were lacking. He stalled the French comeback by tripping Spence for a penalty in the 85th minute, then made way for Koundé in the first minute of added time.
