Cape Verde qualified for the knockout stages of the World Cup after their goalless draw with Saudi Arabia. The Blue Sharks became the first national team to progress from the group stage on their debut appearance since Slovakia in 2010.
40-year-old Vozinha kept another clean sheet, although Cape Verde had far better chances on this one. Despite their winless campaign, they finished second in Group H behind Spain after three draws.
Inaugural champions Uruguay are out following their defeat to Spain. In a contrasting fortune for Uruguay’s iconic goalkeeper, the 39-year-old Fernando Muslera was substituted at half-time after his howler to let in the only goal of the game from Álex Baena.
Spain finished top of the group as they will face the runner-up from Group J in the Round of 32. Cape Verde’s first knockout stage game will be against holders Argentina. Uruguay became the first third-placed team to be eliminated as they only finished with two points.
