World Cup group stage sets attendance record with more than 4.6 million fans

FIFA said on Sunday evening that more than 4.6 million people attended the 2026 World Cup group stage.

Matches across the United States, Canada and Mexico drew crowds that already surpass the previous record for an entire tournament, just under 3.6 million in 1994 in the United States.

The governing body put the tally at 4,644,549 across 72 first round matches, an average of 64,508 per game, with 99.7% of available seats filled.

On 25 June, the tournament recorded its biggest single-day attendance, 426,834 spectators across six fixtures.

Attendances of 80,000 or more were registered at eight matches. The most sought-after fixtures were Portugal v Colombia, which finished 0-0, Mexico v South Korea, which ended 1-0, and the final scheduled for 19 July.

The nations buying the most tickets were the United States, Canada, Mexico, England, Germany, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Australia and France.
