That took place between Brazil and Italy in Pasadena and although normal time and extra-time produced no goals and were low on quality, the drama in the penalty shootout made up for it.

It saw the tournament finish the same way it began: with a disastrously wayward penalty over the crossbar.

Echoing Diana Ross' famous flub at the opening ceremony was Italy icon and Ballon d'Or winner Roberto Baggio, whose sky-high spot-kick proved a lot more costly - handing Brazil the title after team-mates Franco Baresi and Daniele Massaro had also missed earlier.

It was all the more agonising for the man known as the Divine Ponytail, as his incredible individual heroics were the reason the Azzurri had reached the final in the first place - and the torment of the moment has never truly gone away for Baggio, even all these years later.

"After it happened, I felt myself dying inside. I could only think of the reaction of my countrymen. It has affected me for years and I still dream about it. If I could erase one moment from my career, it would be that one."
