Alphonso Davies, absent since the start of the World Cup, will be available for Canada’s round-of-32 tie with South Africa, head coach Jesse Marsch said on Saturday.
The Bayern Munich defender, 25, with 58 caps, has been with the squad but short of fitness and stayed on the bench for the first three matches. He had been managing a hamstring issue from the Champions League semi-finals against PSG.
Marsch said Davies is healthy and ready to play, adding he thinks this is an important moment and a real boost for the team. Davies admitted it was painful watching those three games and said all he wants to do is play.
Canada finished second in their group and now face South Africa at 21:00 on Sunday, with a place in the last 16 at stake.
Despite being co-hosts with the United States and Mexico, Canada will not be on home soil, the match is scheduled for Los Angeles.
