Despite interest in Will Osula on transfer deadline day, it was imperative that Newcastle United kept hold of the Danish centre-forward.
Eintracht Frankfurt and Aston Villa showing interest in the 22-year-old on loan.
In the end though Will Osula will remain on Tyneside until at least January, when the next transfer window opens.
Some Newcastle United fans would have been happy to trade Osula if an acceptable offer came in, for a player who’s scored three goals in twenty-two NUFC competitive appearances, although 17 of those have been as a sub and only five in the starting 11.
Still young and still raw, it was evident in Newcastle’s last fixture against Leeds United that he’s just not quite at that level to lead the line, for a club who are aspiring to compete at the top end of both the Premier League and Champions League tables.
What you can’t question is the player’s desire and heart, as he is always following the game plan and chasing every lost ball.
His goal against Liverpool in the 2-3 loss at St. James’ Park was a special moment for him and at the time for the fans, as Newcastle battled back to 2-2 with ten men in a thrilling encounter. His aerial ability is to be admired, as he proved against Ipswich Town in a 3-0 win back in April. It was Osula’s first goal in the Premier League and it was a brilliant header that was taken in veteran style.
Other than his heading ability, he showed his overall potential in the Under-21 Euros in the summer, scoring three goals and providing two assists in four games, helping Denmark to reach the quarter-finals.
Although his game time will be limited due to new arrivals Nick Woltemade and Yoanne Wissa, there still could be plenty of opportunities for Osula to gain minutes on the pitch and continue to develop under Eddie Howe.
With a congested schedule and always a risk of an injury, Newcastle may need to lean on Osula throughout the season. There is also every chance that Wissa could be away from Tyneside for a significant period of time mid-season, with DR Congo in the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Although Eddie Howe opted to start Anthony Gordon in the nine position in the first two fixtures this season against Aston Villa and Liverpool, he has always been supportive and complimented Osula when asked the question on his playing time.
The plan may be that when Yoane Wissa does return in January, the club looks to put Osula out on loan to develop his attributes or even look to sell him.
What is important is that Newcastle United do have reinforcements for these next few months, reinforcements such as Will Osula who will show commitment whatever he is asked to do.
