Wycombe Wanderers should consider a move to bring Bolton Wanderers star Aaron Morley back to Adams Park, should a move for Luca Connell fall through.

Wycombe Wanderers should explore a reunion with Bolton Wanderers midfielder Aaron Morley if a deal to sign Luca Connell from Barnsley fails to materialise.

The Blues have been chasing Connell for the last couple of weeks, with an initial sub-£1m bid reportedly being rejected, and Barnsley left unwilling to have a conversation, unless the fee was seven-figures.

This saw the Chairboys submit a fresh bid for the Tykes' skipper last week, with the fee believed to be around £1.2m, as per The Bucks Free Press. However, this has also been rejected.

It's was reported that a third bid from the Blues has been lodged, and accepted by Barnsley, believed to be in the region of £1.3m, but Andy Giddings of BBC Football Heaven has since denied these reports.

However, if a deal to sign Connell falls flat, Wycombe should explore the possibility of revisiting Bolton in an attempt to sign former midfielder Morley, who had an excellent loan spell at Adams Park in the first-half of 2024/25.

Wycombe Wanderers' Luca Connell saga still ongoing

The former Celtic midfielder is one of Wycombe's top targets this summer, after the Blues have already been on a spending spree, with seven new signings coming through the door at Adams Park so far this summer.

Wanderers had a first bid reported to be under £1m rejected, and then a second bid that was said to be in the region of £1.2m was also turned down.

However, James Richings of The Bucks Free Press suggested that the Tykes had caved and accepted Wycombe's third bid of £1.3m, but these claims were later denied by Giddings, who suggested that the Yorkshire-based outfit hadn't accepted a new offer from the Blues.

It seems progress has come to a halt between the two parties, and it remains unclear whether Wycombe have or will launch a third attempt to prize the skipper away from Oakwell.

Wycombe should look to Aaron Morley if Connell move fails

With the latest update suggesting that the South Bucks outfit hasn't had a bid accepted for Connell, they could turn to other targets if Barnsley's asking price is deemed too high.

If that's the case, the Chairboys should turn to a former player, who is still very much loved in HP12. Bolton's Morley spent the first-half of last season on loan at Wycombe, as the Blues stunned League One, becoming the early pace-setters.

He returned to the Trotters for the second half of the campaign and continued his fine form, but the correct fee could well convince the Lancashire side to sanction a sale, and it would likely be much less than what Wanderers are reportedly paying for Connell.

Proven at Adams Park, a similar age to the Barnsley captain, and equally capable of filling the role that Connell would play, attempting to bring Morley back to High Wycombe would be a great fallback option, if a move for the Irishman falls through.
