The Xabi Alonso to Chelsea noise is heating up a lot as we began this new week of football news ahead of the summer.

We go in to mid May and a month that sees the end of another football season. But for Chelsea, this summer is going to be absolutely massive for them as the owners attempt to save any kind of chance they might have to win Chelsea fans back over again in a real state of turmoil.

Hiring the right manager this summer as well as signing the right players and changing the overall way they are recruiting players so far, might go some way to getting some Chelsea fans back on side. But there are a lot of ifs and buts around that.

They can start with the manager though, and Xabi Alonso would be a hugely popular choice for them to bring in amongst the Chelsea fan base.

So many reports came out yesterday suggesting Chelsea were now getting closer to appointing Alonso this summer, with some way to go still.

The Independent added their version of events saying that Xabi Alonso tops Chelsea’s shortlist. He apparently believes his system can work with Chelsea’s squad and while there is some distance to go until a deal is struck, contact has progressed between the camps over the last week.

Malo Gusto infuriated some Chelsea fans with his performance on Saturday afternoon, and some are now writing him off for good with their latest reflections on the player.

Chelsea are pushing for Xabi Alonso and the Basque seems interested, with a pre-World Cup deadline certainly possible. And it’s not just Fabrizio Romano reporting it!
