Hannah Hampton has signed a new two-year contract with Chelsea Women, keeping the England number one at Kingsmeadow for the foreseeable future. That matters because securing the best goalkeeper in the world on a long-term deal is the kind of statement of intent Chelsea need after a difficult 2025/26 campaign.
Hampton joined Chelsea from Aston Villa in 2023 and wasted little time establishing herself as the undisputed first choice between the sticks. In three seasons at the club she has won five trophies, including a domestically unbeaten Treble-winning campaign in 2024/25, claimed back-to-back WSL Golden Glove awards, and was handed the Yashin Trophy at the 2025 Ballon d’Or ceremony, recognised as the best goalkeeper on the planet.

The 25-year-old’s journey to the top has been anything but straightforward. Born in Birmingham, she moved to Spain at five and showed early promise at Villarreal as an outfield player, before returning to the UK just before her eleventh birthday. She switched to goalkeeper at Stoke City a year later, then joined Birmingham City at fifteen, where she excelled before a move to Aston Villa in 2021. It was at Villa that she earned her first senior England cap, keeping a clean sheet against Spain on debut.
Hampton was part of the England squad that won Euro 2022 and reached the 2023 Women’s World Cup final. Her Chelsea form then helped the Lionesses retain the European title at Euro 2025, cementing her status as the nation’s number one.

Speaking on signing her new deal, Hampton said she was really happy to extend her stay and described Chelsea as her dream club to play for in England. She added that signing for another two years was a proud moment, and that when she moved to London from the Midlands it was her first time away from home, but everyone at Chelsea made it feel like somewhere she could grow both as a player and as a person.
Hampton was clear that she wants that journey to continue, saying she knows there is so much more she can achieve individually and that the team can achieve collectively. She said she will do everything she can to help Chelsea get back to being as successful as they have been in the past.
The timing of this renewal carries real weight. Chelsea have navigated a period of squad transition, and locking in Hampton, a Yashin Trophy winner still only 25, gives the rebuild a solid foundation. As She Kicks covered earlier this season, Hampton has remained central to Sonia Bompastor’s plans even in a campaign that fell short of Chelsea’s own standards.
Alongside Hampton’s extension, Chelsea have continued to add to their squad this summer, signalling genuine ambition to return to the top of the domestic and European game. That decision says plenty about where the club sees itself heading.
Hampton is the anchor. The rest of the rebuild takes shape around her.
