In recent months, FC Barcelona have been heavily linked with several high profile attacking targets as they prepare for life after Robert Lewandowski, who is approaching the final stretch of his contract at the club.

The Catalans are actively exploring long term solutions in the number nine position, with Julian Alvarez emerging as a leading candidate. However, Barcelona’s search has also brought emerging talents into focus, including Armando Gonzalez, who is enjoying a rapid rise in Mexican football.

The Chivas striker, popularly known as La Hormiga, has established himself as one of the most exciting young forwards in Liga MX and is now set to represent Mexico at the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 under Javier Aguirre.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with SPORT, the 23-year-old opened up about his breakthrough season and his ambitions for the future. While addressing speculation surrounding a potential move to Europe, he admitted that he remains focused on his development for now, even though such opportunities would be welcomed.

When asked directly about the possibility of playing for Barcelona, Gonzalez did not hide his admiration for the club:

“Yes, of course—who wouldn’t? Barça is one of the best teams in history. For me, Guardiola’s team is legendary, and what they’re doing now with Hansi Flick is also very important. Any player would want to get there. If it happens, I’d be very grateful.”

Despite this admiration, the Mexican forward also made a surprising revelation regarding his personal loyalties in Spain. Rather than supporting Barcelona or Real Madrid, his preference lies elsewhere:

“It might surprise you, but I’m an Atlético Madrid fan. My father spent some time in Madrid and used to bring things from Atlético for my brother and me, and I really liked it. I also like Cholo Simeone’s style: commitment, fight, never giving up, taking it game by game.”

The upcoming World Cup would be a big opportunity for Armando Gonzalez to make his name at the highest level. But for now, it remains to be seen whether he will be a serious contender as Barcelona look to strengthen their forward line for the next season.
