Corinthians' move for Moroccan midfielder Zakaria Labyad, proposed by Memphis Depay, has unsettled the club and prompted coach Dorival Júnior to publicly distance himself from the recommendation.
According to Globo.com, Memphis, a former PSV team-mate in 2011/2012, suggested Labyad to market analysis chief Renan Bloise. The suggestion went through football department checks before reaching the coaching staff, who assented.
Despite scout approval, doubts linger over the 32-year-old’s recent impact, fitness record and two seasons in China. Advisers warned president Osmar Stabile, yet the free transfer on wages within the board’s tightened budget was deemed a valid gamble.
Behind the scenes, Stabile was told any failure would lie with the analysis unit. Scepticism persists among his advisers, alongside hope the move pays off.
Labyad arrived in São Paulo on Sunday night and went straight to Neo Química Arena, where he watched Palmeiras beat Corinthians 1-0 from a box.
After the match, Dorival said he had not asked for the signing. He added he knows little about Labyad, had some information from Memphis and that the midfielder would be welcomed and could contribute.
He declined to name who recommended the player or to confirm if he approved the deal, having informed the board and president he would address the issue. He will sign with Corinthians until the end of 2026. He recorded 25 games, six goals and four assists last year, and 31 games, six goals and nine assists in 2024.
