Guarani, the 1978 Brasileirão champions, are seeking a new head coach after early exits this season, with ex-Flamengo boss Zé Ricardo among the leading options.

According to Coluna Do Fla, Zé Ricardo is among the club’s main targets for the rest of the season, alongside Fábio Matias at Portuguesa and Rogério Correia of Ferroviária-SP.

Guarani dismissed head coach Matheus Costa after two early eliminations. The Campinas side fell in the first phase of the Campeonato Paulista, then lost to Castanhal on penalties in the Copa do Brasil second round.

The club will contest Série C for the rest of the year and aim to return to Série B. Finding the right appointment is central to that push.

Zé Ricardo progressed through Flamengo’s youth ranks before taking the first-team job in 2016 and 2017. He oversaw almost 90 matches, winning 47, and lifted the Campeonato Carioca in 2017.

Meanwhile, Flamengo unveiled new head coach Leonardo Jardim on Thursday 5. He will make his debut on Sunday 8 against Fluminense at 18:00 Brasília time in the Carioca final.
