Luke Matheson is eyeing another FA Cup shock on Monday as part-time Macclesfield host Brentford, years after a £1m move to Wolves brought no senior appearance.

He burst onto the scene in 2019, scoring for Rochdale against Manchester United at 16, then went back to school the next day. “It was a dream come true,” he said, speaking to BBC Sport.

“I was getting around £400 a month from Rochdale on my scholarship and £250 of that went on public transport to training. Then I sign for Wolves and they've got three drivers to take me to and from Manchester. The difference was astronomical.”

After 30 Rochdale appearances he joined Wolves' under-23s and never played for the first team. “My three-and-a-half years at Wolves was riddled. It was a torrid time, I never really kicked on in the way that I'd hoped.”

Loan spells in England and Scotland led nowhere and he was released at the end of 2022/23 after injuries, including a high-grade hamstring tear that left him fearing he might never play again. He has since earned a PFA Business School diploma in sports directorship alongside Tim Krul and now continues part time with the Silkmen, hoping to light up the FA Cup again.
