Personnel matters: Karim Adeyemi, Emre Can, Filippo Mane and Marcel Sabitzer were unavailable due to injury, while Yan Couto was absent through illness. Niklas Süle, Julian Ryerson and Maximilian Beier replaced Mane, Couto and Karim Adeyemi in the starting XI, which saw changes in three positions. A trio of young players were on the bench, getting their first taste of Bundesliga action: Samuele Inacio, Mathis Albert and Luca Reggiani.
The match:The Black & Yellows set the tone in the stands and on the pitch. Borussia Dortmund were actually playing in more of a 3-3-2-2 formation with Felix Nmecha almost level with Julian Brandt and Beier alongside Serhou Guirassy. They had 70% possession in the first ten minutes but only managed one half-chance for Guirassy, created by Beier. Despite their early dominance, Wolfsburg had the first big chance as Waldemar Anton lost the ball on the halfway line, but Mohammed Amoura fluffed his lines in front of Gregor Kobel (25) .
At the other end, Beier had a chance to score from just inside the box after receiving a pass from Ryer. His low shot was deflected onto the crossbar by Wolfsburg defender Vavro (33). Five minutes later, the ball was in the back of net as Brandt headed Ryer's corner into the net from close range to give BVB the lead – their sixth goal from a corner this season.
Five minutes after the restart, Nico Schlotterbeck received his fifth yellow card of the season for handball, so he will miss the next game against Mainz (Friday, 20:30 CET). Koulierakis powerfully headed the resulting free kick into the net from close range to make it 1-1. Wolfsburg, led by Amoura, came much closer to scoring a second goal than BVB, who tried to take control of the game but were too sloppy. Wolfsburg's Majer then hit the crossbar with a header in the 80th minute.
In the end, it was BVB who were celebrating as Nmecha beat two Wolfsburg players and tried to play a one-two with Fabio Silva on the edge of the box, but the ball slipped through to Guirassy, who scored from the left to put Borussia back in front (87). Arnold hit the crossbar at the start of stoppage time, but the Black & Yellows held on to their narrow lead and reduced the gap at the top of the table to just three points, at least for one day.
Outlook:This Friday, BVB will face 1. FSV Mainz 05 (kick-off at 20:30 CET). This will be followed by another two “English weeks”.
