Kieran McKenna has been linked with a potential move to West Ham
Kieran McKenna’s future at Ipswich Town has become the subject of intense speculation amid links to West Ham.
It was reported by Football Insider that the Northern Irishman was invited to the London Stadium last week to witness Graham Potter’s side lose 3-0 to rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
The Hammers have made a poor start to the new Premier League season, and McKenna has emerged as one of the front runners to potentially replace Potter, should he be sacked.
Meanwhile, the 39-year-old has earned a lot of plaudits during his time in charge at Portman Road, and could make a natural appointment for the Premier League side.
Here we look at three names Ipswich must consider in the event McKenna does make the switch to West Ham in the near future…
If Potter is going to be on the market with McKenna replacing him at West Ham, then perhaps trying to persuade him to move to Portman Road in the opposite direction could be their best bet.
The fit at West Ham, as well as his previous job Chelsea, hasn’t been the best for the ex-Brighton coach, who hasn’t been able to hit the same heights as he did at the Amex.
But he showed during his time at the Seagulls that he is a quality coach that can play a style of football similar to what McKenna has instilled at Ipswich.
He has a lot of experience at the highest level, including in Europe, and he also knows what it takes to compete in the Championship from his own time at Swansea City.
If Potter can be convinced to move to the second tier after this West Ham stint, then he could be a shrewd appointment, especially as he’ll have something to prove after two underwhelming jobs in a row.
Another ideal candidate could be former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl, who is currently available.
The German spent a season-and-a-half with the Owls, and guided them from almost certain relegation to a 12th place finish in the Championship in that time.
His progressive style of football would make him a great fit for this Ipswich squad, and he could naturally carry on the work of McKenna.
Rohl was crying out for greater investment in the first team squad at Hillsborough, which he ultimately didn’t get before his departure earlier this year.
The Suffolk outfit could afford him that, and give him the platform to really show what he can do with the proper backing.
The Bodo/Glimt manager has earned a lot of praise for his work in Norway, and he has now even got his team competing in the Champions League for the first time.
Kjetil Knutsen has also received a lot of plaudits for the style of football he has introduced during his time with the Norwegian side, conquering big sides on the European stage with an attractive, attacking way of playing.
If he can be convinced to make the move to England, then Ipswich could do extremely well to bring him in to replace McKenna.
He will want the freedom to build the team how he sees fit, and the Tractor Boys should be able to afford him that backing under CEO Mark Ashton.
