We’re trying to find some positives from Chelsea’s defeat to PSG last night. We’ve turned to the stats for solace.

Of course in the end the player ratings look bad because of the final results. But drilling down into individual stats reveals some players who did well.

The Chelsea stars who shone even in painful defeat

Moises Caicedo had a huge amount of ground to cover against a super talented PSG midfield, and as you’d expect the Ecuador star stepped up. He won an insane 8 of 9 ground duels, as well as 5 tackles. Sadly the one mistimed tackle he made opened the pitch up for PSG to score their second goal on a counter attack.

Also really impressive in his duels was Malo Gusto, who won 7 of 8 on the ground. His presence down the right was crucial just as it was in the Club World Cup final, and the Frenchman got his first Champions League goal.

The other goalscorer, Enzo Fernandez, also had a great game. He covered 12.4km in the game, more than anyone else in Blue. His 5 passes into the final third was joint most on his team, and he got an assist for Gusto with a lovely cross-field pass.

In other news…

Liam Rosenior’s decision to use Filip Jorgensen ended up being a disaster, let’s face it. The Standard wrote about it here.

Rosenior was asked about the leak of team news in the press conference after the game, and had some interesting thoughts on the whole thing.
