Manchester City face Chelsea today in a Premier League fixture that has massive ramifications for what lies ahead for Pep Guardiola’s side. With Arsenal losing to Bournemouth yesterday, City have an opportunity to move within six points of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League, with a game in hand and a huge top-of-the-table Premier League fixture between the two teams at the Etihad Stadium on the horizon next weekend. City must beat Chelsea today to take full advantage of Arsenal’s slip-up. One player who is unavailable for today’s match is centre-back Ruben Dias. Manchester City will have to take on Chelsea with one of their key leaders unavailable.
Ruben Dias has missed Manchester City’s past two matches due to injury. He missed City’s Carabao Cup win over Arsenal due to a hamstring injury. The Portuguese international missed City’s 4-0 FA Cup quarter-final tie win after he suffered a muscle injury at training on the Friday before the match at the Etihad. Heading into this weekend’s clash with Chelsea, it wasn’t immediately clear if Ruben Dias would be available to play in today’s match.
Pep Guardiola provided clarity on Ruben Dias’ condition when he fronted the media on Friday. When asked if Ruben Dias would be available for today’s Premier League fixture against Chelsea, Guardiola said: “He’s getting better. He’s not ready for Sunday.”
Leadership and experience are vital at this stage of the season. Manchester City are blessed to have a host of players who are leaders and have title-winning experience in their squad. Rúben Dias, Rodri, Erling Haaland, and Bernardo Silva are in City’s captaincy group for this season. Gianluigi Donnarumma is also a leader in Pep Guardiola’s squad, given his wealth of experience and the success he has experienced across his career.
Ruben Dias provides a wealth of leadership at the back for Manchester City when he is fit. His presence will be missed today against Chelsea; however, City have built a formidable defense without their defensive leader. Abdukodir Khusanov, Marc Guehi, Matheus Nunes, and Nico O’Reilly have given City solidity at the back, and their games all complement each other. In Guehi, although he’s only been at Manchester City since January, Manchester City does have another defensive leader to cover the absence of Dias. Guehi was Crystal Palace’s captain and he is another player who adds leadership to Pep Guardiola’s side.
Manchester City will be without Ruben Dias for today’s massive Premier League fixture against Chelsea. That is a blow for City but they are well-stocked in defence, which has stood out in Manchester City’s past two wins against Arsenal and Chelsea.
