Paulo Fonseca has once more fallen just short of a semi-final with a French club, despite a strong record in knockout football.
According to Le Progres, the 53-year-old has yet to reach a Cup last four in France, failing at that hurdle in five attempts.
With Lille, he went out in the Coupe de France round of 16 to Lyon in 2023 and 2024. His side also lost on penalties in the 2024 Europa Conference League quarter-finals to Aston Villa.
Now at Lyon, the Europa League last four slipped away in a quarter-final second leg remembered at Old Trafford, 2-2, 4-5 after extra time, against Manchester United under Ruben Amorim.
Lyon were then beaten at the same stage this year in the Coupe de France.
Fonseca’s credentials remain clear, with Braga’s 2013 Portuguese Cup at Porto’s expense and three straight Ukrainian Cups with Shakhtar Donetsk between 2017 and 2019, seasons in which he also finished champion.
He still has one shot left in the Europa League.
