Leeds United’s survival bid gained fresh impetus with a 3-0 win at Wolves, then Tottenham’s late slip, leaving Leeds eight points above the bottom three with five games left. Tottenham are yet to win a league match this calendar year.
For long spells against Brighton, Spurs looked set for a vital three points, with Xavi Simons prominent. His first-half cross teed up Pedro Porro for 1-0, and after Kaoru Mitoma levelled, the Dutchman struck again on 77 minutes.
The finale flipped it. In the fifth minute of seven added on, defender Kevin Danso was dispossessed in his own box, Jan Paul van Hecke squared and Georginio Rutter finished to silence the stadium. The result keeps Spurs in the relegation zone, with West Ham seeking to extend a one-point cushion at Crystal Palace this evening.
Rutter marked the moment on Instagram and former Elland Road team-mates responded. Leeds great Stuart Dallas wrote “absolutely marvellous”, while Willy Gnonto added “Merci”.
Leeds could stretch the gap further on Wednesday at in-form Bournemouth, a fixture brought forward due to their FA Cup semi-final commitments. Tottenham visit Wolves on Saturday, then host Leeds next month.
Brighton head coach Roberto De Zerbi remained upbeat, saying he trusts his players’ quality and wants more calm in possession. He described it as a tough spell, stressed nothing is settled with five games and 15 points available, and believes his side could put a winning run together.
