FLW looks at two players who should be on Birmingham City's transfer radar late in the window
Birmingham City have made several eye-catching transfer moves in the past year, and in a bid to make a speedy return to the Premier League, the club will be hoping to seal the signature of more high-quality names in the latter stages of the summer window.
Chris Davies has overseen plenty of incomings and outgoings since the conclusion of the club's record-breaking season in League One, with deals for the likes of Kyogo Furuhashi, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Tommy Doyle, Marvin Ducksch and the return of academy graduate, Demarai Gray, all gaining headlines.
As a result, many are tipping Blues to make an immediate mark on the Championship and potentially become the second club in three seasons to achieve back-to-back promotions from the third-tier to the Premier League after their potential promotion rivals for this term, Ipswich Town.
There is just over a week left for business to be conducted ahead of a gruelling four-month period of second tier action, and FLW has identified two players the West Midlands club should push to sign between now and September 1st.
Birmingham's current defensive options are extremely impressive in many ways, especially in the heart of their back four, but depth and quality can still be improved on in the full-back positions.
Given how much the club had parted with in other departments, this often left first-choice left-back Alex Cochrane extremely underrated by outsiders, with Bluenoses becoming accustomed to the former Brighton and Hove Albion man's mixture of dynamism, creativity and defensive tenacity which made his £1.3m move look an absolute steal.
However, question marks do remain over the fitness of Lee Buchanan, and with Davies previously stating that he intends to sign another left-back, Blues could do far worse than target a move for Dennis Cirkin, whose long-term future at Sunderland remains uncertain.
Granted the former Tottenham Hotspur man has just recovered from wrist surgery, but he is now likely to be third-choice in this field for Regis Le Bris, who has recruited Reinildo Mandava and Arthur Masuaku.
The 23-year-old's style is somewhat conservative in comparison to Cochrane, but he was still able to muster 17 chances for his teammates last season, winning 50 tackles and accumulating five goal contributions.
And, unlike Mikayil Faye of Rennes, who has emerged as yet another ambitious transfer target, Cirkin could be acquired for a much cheaper sum, with the Dublin-born man entering the final year of his contract on Wearside, whilst Capology ESTIMATES his weekly wage is just £10,000 per week.
All things considered, this would be an extremely shrewd deal given Cirkin's strengths, and it wouldn't take a massive chunk out of Birmingham's transfer budget.
Another Premier League name which Blues could target between now and Deadline Day is David Brooks, who would offer a different dimension as well as further depth in wide areas for Davies.
With Scott Wright remaining sidelined until later in the year, Blues' current wide options behind Gray and Keshi Anderson could still do with bolstering, especially after hints that Kanya Fujimoto is likely to be utilised in the 'number 10' role when called upon.
Brooks has the capability to cut inside and cause plenty of damage, which is exactly how Blues like to operate, meaning he and Osayi-Samuel or Ethan Laird could become a lethal combination, and those further forward would also be licking their lips at the high-quality chance creation which would come their way.
Brooks started AFC Bournemouth's first game of the season against Liverpool and assisted Antoine Semenyo in the process, meaning this now could be a difficult deal for Blues to do if the Welshman forces his way back into Andoni Iraola's thoughts on a regular basis.
Therefore, a loan move for the man who was part of Southampton's play-off success two seasons ago could be the answer to a potential problem position for Birmingham, with Brooks previously accumulating 11 goals and 16 assists at Championship level.
