It has been nearly seven years since Manchester United broke the world record transfer fee for a defender to sign Harry Maguire from Leicester City.

United spent £80 million (€91.6m) to win the race for Maguire. The Englishman quickly established himself as one of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s most important players, donning the captain’s armband under him.

Now, Harry Maguire is nearing the end of his time at Old Trafford. As things stand, the 32-year-old will become a free agent at the end of the season. Amid this, a report suggests United are again considering splashing a record-breaking sum to strengthen their defence.

Manchester United working on Alessandro Bastoni bid

A report in Spain claims that Manchester United are preparing a staggering offer for Alessandro Bastoni.

It is understood United are leading the race to sign the Inter Milan centre-back in a desperate attempt to bolster their backline.

The left-footed Italian is regarded as one of Europe’s most well-rounded defenders, having impressed with his physicality and technical ability.

According to Juventus centre-back Giorgio Chiellini, Bastoni, who stands at six feet three inches tall, is “one of the strongest” central defenders around.

Barcelona, Real Madrid, Liverpool and Arsenal are all monitoring the 26-year-old, but it is United who are pushing to secure his signature in the summer.

Inter Milan demand record offer for Bastoni

Bastoni is contracted at San Siro until 2028. As such, Inter are thought to be demanding a fee in the region of €100m for their prized asset.

The Nerazzurri’s demands have not put off United, who are willing to “reach that record figure” to sign Bastoni and “ensure stability for the next five seasons.”

It is added that Arsenal and Liverpool are also open to meeting Inter’s demands. However, United’s project reportedly appeals more to Bastoni.

Given United’s priority is to overhaul their midfield ahead of next season, it is difficult to see INEOS spending a massive fee on a centre-back. As such, it is best to take the claim with a pinch of salt.
