News that Alphonso Davies’ Bundesliga season is over has brought with stark accusations from the player’s agent that the ACL tear could have been avoided. The 24-year-old’s professional representative Nick Huoseh lashed out at the Canadian FA and head coach Jesse Marsch for starting Davies in the CONCACAF Nations League third-place playoff against the USA. As Huoseh explained in an interview with merkur.de, Davies carried an injury into the unimportant match.
“I had an uneasy feeling [when he was injured in the semi-final against Mexico,” Huoseh told the German online paper. “He shouldn’t have played in the third-place play-off against the USA. I was surprised that he started, because he had said that he wasn’t fit to start. [I thought] he shouldn’t have been fielded at all.
“In my opinion, he should assessed the situation better,” Huoseh said of Marsch. “This horrible injury could have been 100 percent avoided. Jesse Marsch worked as a professional coach at the highest level in Europe [at RB Leipzig and Leeds among others]. He should know that you can’t take any risks with a player if he signals that he can’t play.
“I’m well aware that the motivation to win an international match against the U.S. is correspondingly high – but the health of the players should always come first,” Huoseh concluded. “National teams need to do a better job of protecting their players.“
